It’s Spay/Neuter Awareness Month! (2021)

We all look at February as being the month of “puppy love”, but did you know that it’s also Spay/Neuter Awareness Month? The goal of recognizing the importance of spay and neuter this month is to encourage pet owners to get their pets fixed as well as share the benefits that come with spaying or neutering your pet.

Spay/Neuter is the most effective tool we have when it comes to combating pet overpopulation and making sure every pet has a loving home. There are also proven health and behavioral benefits that come with having your pet spayed or neutered. With that being said, let’s dive into the top 3 reasons why you should spay or neuter your pet.

Top 3 Benefits of Spaying or Neutering your Pet

1. Health Benefits

We all want to keep our pets happy and healthy. By investing in spay/neuter we can help eliminate some common health risks seen in intact pets. Spaying lowers the risk of developing ovarian or breast cancer. Neutering reduces the risk of testicular cancer.

2. Improved Behavior

By spaying or neutering your pet, you can help get rid of some commonly seen behavioral problems. One common issue is pets getting loose and roaming the streets in search of a mate. Some pets have been known to jump fences and escape through left-open doors. This is dangerous not only because of the risk of possible unplanned litters but also for the safety of the pet. A loose pet is at a greater risk of being in an accident or getting lost. Spay/neuter also reduces a pet’s urge to urinate to mark their territory.

3. Preventing Unwanted Litters

Lastly, having your pet spayed or neutered can help get us one step closer to resolving pet overpopulation and unwanted litters. By spaying or neutering your pet, you help decrease the chance of an unwanted litter ending up in a shelter.
