Springtime brings blooming flowers and warmer weather, but at the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia (HSNEGA), it also marks the arrival of one of the busiest times of year: Puppy and Kitten Season.

While the sight of tiny paws and fuzzy ears is heartwarming, this season puts an immense strain on our resources. To save these vulnerable lives, we rely on a combination of immediate community support, proactive prevention, and long-term donor commitment.

The Nursery Needs: Our Wishlist

Our tiniest residents require around-the-clock care and specialized nutrition. Unlike adult pets, orphaned kittens and puppies have fragile immune systems and specific dietary needs. To help us get through this surge in litters, we are in need of the following items:

Managing Community Cats

Not every kitten born this season is an orphan. Through our Community Cat Program—a collaboration between Hall County Animal Services, Best Friends Animal Society, and HSNEGA—we work to manage the outdoor cat population humanely.

By utilizing Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), we ensure community cats are spayed/neutered and returned to their outdoor homes. This stops the cycle of reproduction while allowing cats to live out their lives.

Prevention: The Key to Ending Overpopulation

While we love every animal that enters our doors, our ultimate goal is to prevent pet overpopulation before it starts. We tackle this through two main avenues:

  1. No More Litters Program: If your pet has a “surprise” litter, HSNEGA is here to assist. We help find the puppies or kittens loving homes and, most importantly, we spay the mother at no cost to the owner to ensure it’s her last litter. 2. Affordable Spay/Neuter: Prevention is the best medicine. Our Christian-David Healthy Pet Clinic offers affordable spay and neuter services to the public. Booking an appointment is the single most effective way you can help battle pet overpopulation in Northeast Georgia. Click here to learn more about HSNEGA’s spay and neuter services.

Why Monthly Giving Matters

Puppy and kitten season isn’t just a week-long event; it’s a months-long marathon. When you become a monthly donor, you provide the steady, reliable funding we need to purchase milk replacer in May, fund spay surgeries in June, and keep the lights on for long-stay residents all year round.

Your recurring gift ensures that no matter how many “surprises” arrive at our doors, we never have to say no to an animal in need.
