The year 2018 felt like a series of closed doors for one local woman. It began in May with the loss of her longtime companion, a little dog named Lacy. By July, her world was further upended by the passing of her husband. To top off a season of grief, September brought the end of a 25-year career. She was, understandably, devastated. In the quiet of a house that felt far too empty, she decided it was time to let a little light back in. She came to the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia and found two girls, Stella and Gemma.
Finding Hope Through Pet Adoption at the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia
It wasn’t until she got them home and began looking through their paperwork that she realized these weren’t just any two dogs—they were sent to her. As she scanned the dates, the breath left her lungs. Stella’s birthday was the exact same month and day as her late husband’s. Gemma was born on the very day her beloved Lacy had passed away. In that moment, the grief shifted into a sense of profound peace; she knew with every fiber of her being that these girls were supposed to be hers.
But healing isn’t always a straight line. Just a week after the pet’s adoption, the loud, chaotic energy of house painters sent Stella into a panic. While staying at a friend’s condo in Dawsonville, Stella bolted out the door and disappeared into the thick Georgia woods.
Earning a Rescue Dog’s Trust
For three weeks, a quiet battle of patience unfolded. Stella was visible, watching from the tree line, but too terrified to come in. Her new mom refused to give up. Every day, she placed food and water outside, inching the bowls closer and closer to the porch with each passing sunset. She set out a familiar bed and used a camera to watch as Stella crept up in the dead of night to find a moment of rest.
It took twenty-one days of persistence, but finally, the distance between them closed. Stella chose to come home.
Earning that trust wasn’t just a victory for Stella; it was a turning point for her owner, too. In the process of rescuing a scared dog from the woods, she found herself being pulled out of her own darkness. Looking back on the journey, she knows that the struggle was worth it. She didn’t just adopt two dogs; she found two souls who needed her just as much as she needed them.
